Origin of Word Google

  • The word ‘Google’ has an interesting origin. First and foremost, the name 'Google' is a play on the word 'Googol', which was coined by Milton Sirotta, nine-year-old nephew of U.S. mathematician Edward Kasner in 1938, to refer to the number represented by 1 followed by one hundred zeros. Although accepted to be coincidental, the name has also been interpreted as being the result of the merging of the words ‘go’ and ‘ogle’ (Wikipedia, 2005). Furthermore, in British slang, to “throw a googly? means to ask a hard or unanswerable question (Wikipedia, 2005).
  • Today, the term ‘google’ is so widely used and recognised that it has worked its way into modern dictionaries. The online dictionary, http://www.dictionary.com, defines ‘google’ as a verb, meaning ‘to search for information on the Internet’ (Dictionary.com, 2005).

Googly means a Zigzag bowling in cricket, which means like a Googly eyes of OWL. OWL has the biggest eyes (relative to its size) which helps to see a wide region with moving the eyes, The Tamil word for OWL is KOOHAL
The Cricket word GOOGLY is related to Eye.
There is an adjective GOO-GOO which is related to Eye.
The word GOGGLE related to Eye, Owl's eye.
Now,
"Googol" was suggested by a 9 year old boy when asked to suggest a name for a "very, very large number". That child proposed it because the word is too large to handle by EYEs.
It wasn't an unrelated or fictional word.
When you think of reading, "an unreadable very large number", the child thought of Goggle and pat came the reply GooGol.
This Googol was again played-with to get to Google by its creators.
Even though the word came from a round-about route, it ultimately took the help of the watchful OWL.
Koohal is the actual root of Google!

The word google has been used without real meaning for hundreds of years in literature. Check out Enid Blyton's pop cakes and google buns from 1938 in the Faraway Tree series.

Exactly.... And when you read that together with the fact that a nine year old boy suggested the name "googol" in 1938 as well, it's fairly obvious where the word origin lies.

Incorrect. A Googly is an off break bowled with a leg break action. It's also known as a Bosie after its inventor Bernard Bosanquet.

Google simply means "Too much to see at once." This causes you to be "googly eyed, with the vast amount of information before your face." This provokes you on a long journey of searching and learning that never ends. You will eventually develop Homer Simpson eyes.

Rob Pethybridge: By the most astonishing coincidence, I opened a copy of the Faraway Tree this morning at a random page and read the first paragraph. It was the one describing pop-cakes and Google buns. I therefore rushed to look for the origin of the word Google, and ended up here :-).

I remember seeing the word google (sp?) written on the sidewalk on the bridge over the Charles River near MIT in 1959.
